Latest Foster: Sherlock

Our latest foster dog is Sherlock. He is a 3.5 year old, male, 20 lb dog. The humane society says he is a Puggle but I think he is a Boxer-Something mix. He is kind of shy and nervous right now but he has warmed up a litle already. There has been no friction with Trudy. He was picked up as a stray and is kind of emaciated. He needs to gain some weight before he goes up for adoption. When he was picked up he weighed 14 lbs. He gained 6 pounds at the Westland shelter but still needs to gain some more.

Possum's in My Yard

This morning in broad daylight an opossum was raiding our squirrel feeder. Very strange to see one out in broad daylight.

The rain put a damper on Halloween. We only had 42 kids at the door. Half of the usual total.
We had Trudy in her usual ladybug costume and Petunia was dressed as a pink hippo.

New Foster Dog: Petunia

After a long hiatus we've taken to fostering for the MHS again. Our latest foster is Petunia.
She is a 5 lb, female, Pomeranian. She was picked up as a stray; her age is estimated at 8 years. I would call it a case of animal abuse. She is emaciated and has a jaw problem that keeps her from closing her mouth. You have to chop her food up really fine but she eagerly eats everything she gets. She also has a cold. We will keep her for several weeks until she is healthy enough to go for adoption.

It took a month but both skunks have been caught and transported.

Friday morning was kind of sad. The mother skunk was in the trap and the young skunk was on the outside waiting for mom to come out. The kid is big enough to survive on his own at this point but still.

Tonight we got the second one. Hopefully, they will relocate him to the same spot as the first one. I hate harming animals but with a dog in the house we can't have skunks living under the deck in the back yard. That is a recipe for disaster.

Me vs the Skunk(s)

I really don't want the skunk living under my deck (see the previous post). So I paid to have a trap and relocate service set a live trap to try and get the skunk.

Day 1: I watch the skunk walk around the trap and go everywhere but in the trap.
Day 2: I wake up in the morning and find a Raccoon in the trap. I let him out and he runs off.
Day 4: In the evening I see two skunks walking around the trap but not going in. In the morning the pears and graham crackers with peanut butter were gone. The trap has been tripped but there is no skunk in the trap.
Day 5: They mock me. Once again the pears and graham crackers with peanut butter were gone and the trap wasn't tripped. Every time I look in the back yard during the night I see them walking about. When I go out they dive under the deck. I need to ask for a new trap.
Day 6: 8/20 Once again, the bate is gone but no skunk in the trap. Today we got a different trap. We shall see.
Day 7: 8/21 A young raccoon was in the trap. I set him free. No skunks.

Le sigh, le mope....

This afternoon I looked out the back door and saw a skunk grazing on the ground feeder.
Really unusual to see a skunk out in broad daylight.

Sadly we lost Casey on Saturday June 16th. She was 15 years 5 months old and a great dog.
She will be missed.
